Summary

After twenty-three years, Orson Scott Card returns to his acclaimed bestselling series with the first true, direct sequel to the classic Ender's Game

In Ender's Game, the world's most gifted children were taken from their families and sent to an elite training academy。 At Battle School, they learned combat, strategy, and secret intelligence to fight a dangerous war on behalf of those left on Earth。 But they also learned some important and less definable lessons about life。

After the life-changing events of those years, these children—now teenagers—must leave the school and readapt to life in the outside world。

Having not seen their families or interacted with other people for years—where do they go now? What can they do?

Ender fought for humanity, but he is now reviled as a ruthless assassin。 No longer allowed to live on Earth, he enters into exile。 With his sister Valentine, he chooses to leave the only home he's ever known to begin a relativistic—and revelatory—journey beyond the stars。

What happened during the years between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead? What did Ender go through from the ages of 12 through 35? The story of those years has never been told。 Taking place 3000 years before Ender finally receives his chance at redemption in Speaker for the Dead, this is the long-lost story of Ender。

For twenty-three years, millions of readers have wondered and now they will receive the answers。 Ender in Exile is Orson Scott Card's moving return to all the action and the adventure, the profound exploration of war and society, and the characters one never forgot。

On one of these ships, there is a baby that just may share the same special gifts as Ender's old friend Bean

The one really disappointing part of this book is that it doesn’t explain why the “buggers” did what they did in the first book; why they allowed their own extinction and what exactly they told Ender。 There are hints, but no cold hard facts。 They communicate with him but we don’t get to hear it。 I read this book for that reason, I wanted to know the real story! I put it down wondering if there ever was a real story。The rest of the book and the adventure, I enjoyed。 It’s the third book of the ser The one really disappointing part of this book is that it doesn’t explain why the “buggers” did what they did in the first book; why they allowed their own extinction and what exactly they told Ender。 There are hints, but no cold hard facts。 They communicate with him but we don’t get to hear it。 I read this book for that reason, I wanted to know the real story! Wow! I never thought an ender book will be this good especially after reading the First and Second Formic War storylines。 Maybe it has to do with Ender Wiggin himself。 Maybe it is the special care Orson put in this character and certainly it shows in the books。I absolutely loved how Orson narrated the things that happened after Ender won the war。 There are few scenes that don't necessarily lead to anywhere, like that duo who went into a mine and found a live Formic larvae and the discoveries the Wow! As always with this saga, Ender saves the day, but this time as someone who is attempting to reconcile how he views his past actions with who he is and wants to be as well as the different expectations of who the worlds want him to be。 Although the internal voice of Ender is different then previous books, this one fills in the development stage from warrior to observant speaker。

Got confused when the “Speaker for the Dead” came up, as I thought it was from the first book, but enjoyed reading this after Ender’s Game earlier this year。 OSC is a genius, would love to meet him 🤩 always ten steps ahead with his characters and the genius behind all their “plotting”, amazing!

How did I not know this book existed? It was nice spending time with all the characters again。

I seem to remember the beginning of this book and either I never finished it or I'd forgotten the rest。 I'm glad I'm rereading it because it's answered alot of the questions I had while reading Speaker for the Dead which I seem to remember more of。 I seem to remember the beginning of this book and either I never finished it or I'd forgotten the rest。 I'm glad I'm rereading it because it's answered alot of the questions I had while reading Speaker for the Dead which I seem to remember more of。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was such an amazing sequel compared to other books! I loved the all the time Ender spent with everyone。 The ending for me was very dramatic and surprising with that Achilles was Petras son!I’m very glad that Ender survived him being beat。 Otherwise it’s a really amazing book。

I must admit I wasn’t expecting much of this book, considering the many 1-star reviews。 However, I was pleasantly surprised。 This, in my opinion, is one of the strongest of the series。 Despite essentially being a prequel novel, I think Card did an excellent job of bringing together the threads of both the Ender series and the Ender’s Shadow series。 It definitely had weaknesses and things I wish he had gone into more detail about or hadn’t spent so much time on, but overall it was a very solid ed I must admit I wasn’t expecting much of this book, considering the many 1-star reviews。 However, I was pleasantly surprised。 This, in my opinion, is one of the strongest of the series。 Despite essentially being a prequel novel, I think Card did an excellent job of bringing together the threads of both the Ender series and the Ender’s Shadow series。 It definitely had weaknesses and things I wish he had gone into more detail about or hadn’t spent so much time on, but overall it was a very solid edition to the series。 。。。more

Ender in Exile is bogged by time skips and confusing story lines。 However, once you look past it’s faults, the book blossoms into the perfect direct sequel to the original book。 Many characters are introduced and fleshed out, including Valentine, which was a welcome surprise, and it helps to explain what Ender and his companions did after the war。 If you’re looking to spend more time in the world of Ender’s Game, this book is it。

I wish the way that the online library catalog had it ordered was correct to the way that it's labeled here。 Because being book 1。2 of the Ender's series is far more accurate than being placed after Speaker for the Dead and xenocide。 Really I think the reading order should start with the beginning of the formics wars series, then read Ender's Game the book which would contain all the parts of this book that came before Ender leaving Shakespeare, followed by Ender's shadow, followed by the shadow I wish the way that the online library catalog had it ordered was correct to the way that it's labeled here。 Because being book 1。2 of the Ender's series is far more accurate than being placed after Speaker for the Dead and xenocide。 Really I think the reading order should start with the beginning of the formics wars series, then read Ender's Game the book which would contain all the parts of this book that came before Ender leaving Shakespeare, followed by Ender's shadow, followed by the shadow of the hegemon, followed by Speaker for the Dead and xenocide and finally Giants shadow。 The only reason that Giant Shadow would come before Speaker for the Dead would be if planet that sent the virus that disturb the ecosystem of the piggies was actually from with the Giant and his children did。 。。。more

Not as good as other outings but still a good book with a very strong finale。 I may not have liked this as much as the other Ender books and short stories, but it was still fun。 I do think my enjoyment of this book would have been higher had I gone through the Enders Shadow series。 Which I do intend to go through, just wanted to do all of Enders books first。 I would have never known this book was slotted into the Shadow books as well as the Ender books if I hadn't been informed by the author in Not as good as other outings but still a good book with a very strong finale。 I may not have liked this as much as the other Ender books and short stories, but it was still fun。 I do think my enjoyment of this book would have been higher had I gone through the Enders Shadow series。 Which I do intend to go through, just wanted to do all of Enders books first。 I would have never known this book was slotted into the Shadow books as well as the Ender books if I hadn't been informed by the author in the afterword。 But apparently there are characters and things that happen that seeming tie in。 I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff so I'm confident it would have been more appealing to me had I gone through those as well。 I don't have much else to say about this book other than I really did love the climax。 It made me appreciate Ender even more than I already do。 Very good finale。And that's the Ender books done! This is the second time that I’ve accidentally re-read an Enderverse book。 I got about halfway through and realized that I’ve read this before。 I think I forgot about the story because the vast majority of the story is so forgettable。 There are some important themes here about the relationships between parents and children, but overall this story spends way too much time getting to the last 20% where things actually get interesting。 The funny thing is that the author’s afterword admits that the This is the second time that I’ve accidentally re-read an Enderverse book。 I got about halfway through and realized that I’ve read this before。 I think I forgot about the story because the vast majority of the story is so forgettable。 There are some important themes here about the relationships between parents and children, but overall this story spends way too much time getting to the last 20% where things actually get interesting。 The funny thing is that the author’s afterword admits that the story was originally supposed to quickly progress to that portion of the story before he decided to extend the earlier part of the book。 I wish he would have stuck with his original plan。I’ve always enjoyed the ender prequels and the shadow series way more than the actual ender sequels。 I know I’ll need to eventually reread some of them when the final entry comes out, but I’m not looking forward to it。 。。。more

I liked it in spite of itself。 It's written to fill in some gaps of the Ender / Shadow series, and unfortunately, that's how it reads: as filler, not as a compelling story on its own。 There's enough of the appeal of Ender the character to make it readable, but it also feels unnecessary。 I liked it in spite of itself。 It's written to fill in some gaps of the Ender / Shadow series, and unfortunately, that's how it reads: as filler, not as a compelling story on its own。 There's enough of the appeal of Ender the character to make it readable, but it also feels unnecessary。 。。。more

If I had to summarize this book as a reader who loved Enders Game and Speaker but skipped the Shadow books, I'd say it was a series of seemingly unimportant conflicts and characters with sprinkles of satisfaction。 Instead of being excited about filling in the gaps, there were a lot of "what's the point" grumbles with a few, "huh, I guess that works" moments。It was fun revisiting Ender, but I'd recommend reading the Shadow series first。 If I had to summarize this book as a reader who loved Enders Game and Speaker but skipped the Shadow books, I'd say it was a series of seemingly unimportant conflicts and characters with sprinkles of satisfaction。 Instead of being excited about filling in the gaps, there were a lot of "what's the point" grumbles with a few, "huh, I guess that works" moments。It was fun revisiting Ender, but I'd recommend reading the Shadow series first。 。。。more

I thought that this was a nice continuation of the story that bridges the gap between Ender's Game, the Shadow Series, and the next set of sequels。 There were a few times that you could tell that problems were written in search of a solution, that solution being a reason for this book to exist outside of a 100 page novella。 Objectively, and certainly to people who read the original sequels when they came out, I'm sure it's probably more of a 2/5, but I enjoy these characters and universe a lot s I thought that this was a nice continuation of the story that bridges the gap between Ender's Game, the Shadow Series, and the next set of sequels。 There were a few times that you could tell that problems were written in search of a solution, that solution being a reason for this book to exist outside of a 100 page novella。 Objectively, and certainly to people who read the original sequels when they came out, I'm sure it's probably more of a 2/5, but I enjoy these characters and universe a lot so for me it's a 3。5/5。 I definitely think Graff got a little bit too mushy, but I guess there is some sort of setup for his character to do so in EG, I just don't know that it's significant enough。 I liked that characters from Ender's Shadow show up here, and that some attempt to tie up loose ends was made。 I don't love how hastily it was done, and in a totally separate plot from the rest of the book's main story。 The first two parts, on the ship and on Shakespeare, work well together, but the last part that takes up only a few dozen pages seemed forced。 I'm not sure what Card's thought process was/is at this point with his writing, and I am quite sure I don't want to know。I wasn't impressed by Card's admission in the afterword that he's basically forgotten a lot of the details of this series and couldn't be bothered to go back and re-read his own writing in order to ensure consistency when he wrote this book, and so instead relied on fans to answer his questions for him。 I honestly don't know how he kept chugging out enjoyable work this long。 He is also really beating a dead horse with the not-so-subtle inclusions of the "family matters" trope at this point。 It was exhausting when it cropped up in the Shadow series; he recovered well enough by the end。 It's in this book, too, and it's completely obvious。 Of course it's important to him, of course it's what he believes, but it's like he feels bad for swearing too much and not including his beliefs in his original book and has been making up for it since by trying to find a way to shove them into the plots of the sequels。 Even though we share the same beliefs (though I'm sure we see them differently in just about every way), it's still painful to me to see him shoehorn this stuff into his work。 It's just not well executed and comes at the potential cost of his stories。 You can't keep revisiting the same "everyone wants a huge happy family" trope without it becoming cheesy and overplayed。 I've had to compartmentalize a lot while reading this series, but it's an interesting enough world with such good characters (mostly) that it doesn't come as too much of an issue for me。 We'll see what happens in the Speaker series。 。。。more
